Circumcision was a covenant and a sign of tribal identity. A mark that the Israelites took thousands of years ago, to show God, that they were committed to being a new type of people in the world. Paul brilliantly identifies that it is absolutely necessary to use human construct, language and practices to describe a God that is beyond explainable and beyond our understanding, yet at the same time recognises that we can become fully entrenched in practice or ritual itself that it can actually cause us to move away from knowing God.

Lead Pastor Stuart Starr looks at how our hearts and lives are inevitably shaped by the people we honour. An honest look at our hearts would reveal that most often times, it can actually seem counter-intuitive to hold anyone in higher esteem than ourselves, except if they are a famous influencer, a political leader or a prominent athlete.
Paul’s reassuring message to the Philippians is reassuring for us - that if our hearts’ baseline and focal point is of Christ, then our actions will naturally follow - actions that speak about the work that has to be done for the Kingdom to progress and for Christ to be preached, as well as the overwhelming desire to seek the path already laid out for us. The way that Timothy and Epaphroditus chose.

It shouldn’t be of much surprise, that we are today living in what many refer to as a “Post-Christian Society”. Our thoughtlessness for each other, the desire of self and ego, the way in which discrimination runs unchecked - so how do we act in a world where everything, at every turn, is lined with deception, evil and hatred?
Paul’s answer? To Shine like Stars.
To live a life that is exemplary. A life that stands in defiance of hatred and evil. To live as Christ and to die to the old ways and the bondage of sin. Christ was building something new in Paul and in the world he lived in, just as He continues to build this world, remaking it in His image, through us.
Paul invites us to live a life in Christ, to work out each decision that we make with fear and trembling - in recognition that each decision we face is ultimately bringing the Kingdom of God nearer, or pushing it away.

How would you respond if you lived under persecution and under the foot of oppression - if you had your rights stripped from you and if you had your basic humanness denied? When in chains for the Gospel, Paul preached Christ. He spoke of an inner joy that surpassed all human wisdom, and a peace that kept him grounded even in the toughest of circumstances.
