Circumcision was a covenant and a sign of tribal identity. A mark that the Israelites took thousands of years ago, to show God, that they were committed to being a new type of people in the world. Paul brilliantly identifies that it is absolutely necessary to use human construct, language and practices to describe a God that is beyond explainable and beyond our understanding, yet at the same time recognises that we can become fully entrenched in practice or ritual itself that it can actually cause us to move away from knowing God.

Paul invites us to live a life in Christ, to work out each decision that we make with fear and trembling - in recognition that each decision we face is ultimately bringing the Kingdom of God nearer, or pushing it away.
